How do I get a domain and have it redirect to another site?

September 24, 2013

A frequently-asked query:

I want to buy a domain. BUT what I want is when you go to that domain, it redirects you to another site (free hosting website or sub domain)

I already have the second site that I want the domain to be directed too. Can someone please help me with this? I use http://byethost.com/ for free web hosting. Is GoDaddy a good option?

Answer: Here is why many business owners are wrong about getting free web hosting. Free hosting will not be the best hosting for most. Web hosting is the heart of your web presence and can mean the success and failure for your business.

Before we answer your question, let us review the 7 features to look for in a good web hosting. An excellent hosting:

  1. does not suspend accounts as easily,
  2. gives unlimited diskspace,
  3. offers unlimited bandwidth,
  4. gives multiple add-on domains,
  5. has friendly Site Builder,
  6. has Fantastico and QuickInstall to quickly install apps like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, OSCommerce, ZenCart and more
  7. can be easily upgraded to VPS or one of their best dedicated server plans if and when your business require.

Answering your question, 92% of Webmasters recommended to try Hostgator. If you need an “unlimited” hosting plan, experts usually highly recommend going with Hostgator because they are the best cheap cpanel hosting around.

What if you find out that Hostgator sucks after you signed up with them? HG has 45 days, longer-than-industry-average money back guarantee so you have ample time to test them out. They are rated A+ by Better Business Bureau which shows their commitment to customer satisfaction. You also do not have to pay for the first month. You can just try their fully functional hosting service – you pay only $0.01 (you need to use the special coupon code). Do you know any other hosting company that can give you that kind of assurance? Anybody can grab an account from Hostgator for almost FREE.

Who Should Not Try Hostgator

To be honest, no web hosting service is perfect. Drawback of Hostgator includes:

  1. No free domain name – but you can easily get a domain name from the best domain registrar such as Godaddy or Namecheap for $10 or less. Would you agree that a website is not complete without a domain name?
  2. You need to pay full price after your first invoice – well, they need to make money too and all the support and great service do come with a cost

If you are still not sure if HG is right for you, or you have specific query about anything at all, try the Live Chat at HG. They are fast and knowledgeable. Just shoot them some questions before you decide.

I guess there are more than one way to do this, but the free option would be to point the new domain at the IP address of your server for the new site.
GoDaddy is quite suitable for this type of thing because they allow you to manipulate the DNS settings yourself – I took a look at the ‘nodaddy’ site, and I don’t think the pose any more of a risk that any other domain registrar – they’re just one of the biggest…
For global domains, I use Godaddy, for local (.co.uk) I use a company called 1and1 – but as long as the service offers a good ‘dashboard’ that allows you to point the domain or even ‘redirect’ (GoDaddy offers either) then these options will work.
You may have a problem with pointing at the IP address, as the host server will need to know that you want your site to appear under your domain – if they don’t allow this, you may have to use the ‘rediredt’ option – which if memory serves me correctly, means that once you have been redirected, the URL within the address bar reverts to the ‘native’ host URL.
What I mean is that if you had ‘mysite.bytehost.com’ and you bought ‘freesite.com’ and redirected, once your browser ‘arrived’ at your site, the adress bar would revert to mysite.bytehost.com…
I had a look at bytehost and it looks quite good, I am just wondering if their ‘vista panel’ (loks like a rip-off of CPanel) would allow you to register domains against your subdomains – I know that you can do this in CPanel…
If it does, I am sorely tempted to sign up!! although I am guessing they force advertising on your site or something like that?? in which case, I won’t bother… and if that is the case, the ads will still appear when you point your own domain presumably…
The services I use (and how I use them) are mentioned in the article below:

Don’t use godaddy because of http://www.nodaddy.com

    My recommended service:
    http://www.goldpuma.com

    Hope this helps.
