How do you transfer your website?

December 26, 2013

A frequently-asked question:

My website is currently being hosted on HostGator and I want to transfer it to a new webhost. It’s a wordpress website and it’s not to large but I’ve never done anything like this before. Can someone explain to me how this is supposed to be done? Is it hard to do?

Answer: Here is why many business owners are wrong about getting free web hosting. Free hosting will not be the best hosting for most people. Web hosting is one of the most critical thing for your business and can mean the life or death to your business.

Before we answer your question, let us review the 7 features to look for in a good web hosting. An excellent hosting:

  1. does not suspend accounts as easily,
  2. gives more-than-enough diskspace,
  3. offers no limit on bandwidth,
  4. gives multiple add-on domains,
  5. has friendly Site Builder,
  6. has Fantastico and QuickInstall to quickly install apps like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, OSCommerce, ZenCart and more
  7. can be easily upgraded to VPS or one of their best dedicated server plans if and when your business require.

Answering your question, 92% of Webmasters recommended to try Hostgator. If you need an “unlimited” hosting plan, experts usually highly recommend going with Hostgator because they are the best cheap cpanel hosting around.

What if you find out that Hostgator sucks after you signed up with them? HG has 45 days, longer-than-industry-average money back guarantee so you have ample time to test them out. They are rated A+ by Better Business Bureau which shows their commitment to customer satisfaction. You also do not have to pay for the first month. You can just try their fully functional hosting service – you pay only $0.01 (you need to use the special coupon code). Do you know any other hosting company that can give you that kind of assurance? Anybody can grab an account from Hostgator for almost FREE.

Who Should Not Try Hostgator

To be honest, no web hosting service is perfect. Drawback of Hostgator includes:

  1. No free domain name – but you can easily get a domain name from the best domain registrar such as Godaddy or Namecheap for $10 or less. Would you agree that a website is not complete without a domain name?
  2. You need to pay full price after your first invoice – well, they need to make money too and all the support and great service do come with a cost

If you are still not sure if HG is right for you, or you have specific query about anything at all, try the Live Chat at HG. They are fast and knowledgeable. Just shoot them some questions before you decide.

Hostgator use the cPanel. It is easy to migration. Now you just provide your new hosting the cPanel information. They will happy to accomplish the task.

What I recommend you do is if you are transferring to a new web host submit a ticket to them. Usually they will help you with things like this.

quite simply you need to create a copy of your files and also a copy of the database. There are a couple of plugin you could use to create your backup or you could go to phpMyAdmin in your cPanel and export your database. Download this file and import on your new host.

The whole process is not hard and there are plenty of tutorials.

If you need any help feel free to check us out, our hosting plans start at $5 month.

Please be very careful as this transfer process can easily go sideways. It can end up causing you a lot of headache and frustration as even a small WordPress website will be close to 100 MB in size and when you’re uploading this amount of information you can easily burn an hour of your time if you get it wrong.

If you’ve never done this before than there are definitely things that can easily go wrong with regards to database configuration etc.

I have done this many times and I have found 2 very reliable solutions. If you just wish to migrate your website to a new hosting provider using the same domain name then I suggest using a service called Blog-vault.

If you’re looking to duplicate a website to a new hosting environment with a different domain name then I suggest using the WPtwin Plugin (http://wptwin.com/). This plug-in simply duplicates an entire website and changes all the required URL structures so an exact duplicate of the website sits under a different domain name on any host you wish.

Either way, I highly recommend you subscribe to blog vault (http://blogvault.net/) as it is the easiest backup and restore WordPress option available and it also contains a migration feature. Hope this helps.
