(It’s not cheap, but some companies understand that an educated employee is a valuable asset.) They have courses on Linux, databases (my wife is starting to take a series of courses on that, even though she teaches Word and Excel) and web-related things (I’ll be taking an Ajax class soon).
What I did was went and bought a pizza box (server) and had it in a local datacenter. It was a Cobalt RAQ – I didn’t know any better at the time but I did cut my teeth on it. (I still have it too.)
After a couple of years when the software for the RAQ was becoming outdated, I brought that box home and rented a dedicated server and ran dedicated servers on my own. It’s really the best way to learn.
